Unsinkable

I think we're all familiar with a vessel named RMS Titanic, a passenger liner that struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City and sank on April 15, 1912. A total of 1,517 lives were lost that day.

The RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world and carried 2,223 people on her first and last journey. Enormous pride was put into building the ship, and experienced engineers used some of the most up-to-date technology and safety features available that time. The great ship was thought to be unsinkable, yet four days into her crossing, she went down...

Can we see this tragedy happening within us? How do we live? Do we rely solely on our own skills and wisdom to keep ourselves afloat from all the turmoil? Do we take pride on being unsinkable by barely keeping our head above water? I have seen capable and well-to-do men do this and later on developed anxiety disorders. Some wanted things so much that they destroyed their dignity in the process, some became too afraid of losing what they gained that they developed obsessive compulsive behaviors, and there were some who began losing friends because they became too greedy.

Truth is, if we only have our own means to pull us through everything, we will soon also hit our own iceberg and sink. In fact, Psalm 118:8 tells us that it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man – and in case it hasn't hit you yet, we're but men (and women).

On the other hand, there was a vessel that stood the test of the elements just when it should have...

It was a frail boat made of wood and was not even big enough to hold too many people. In fact, it was so average, I don't think it even had a name. It had no special feature or fancy gadget, but on it's stern laid a sleeping Savior. A Savior who, just as the storm came, got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm (Mark 4:35-41). Now, it may not be very magnificent to behold, but that's the kind of vessel that I'd rather be on - The boat occupied by Jesus.

God bless!
