It is Not What God Has Given Us: An Article Inspired by Nick Vujicic

If God gave you a glass filled halfway with water. Would you describe it as half full or half empty? Would you constantly complain that God never gives you more, or would you be thankful for having enough and constantly trust Him to give you your fill?

In my post, The Path Back Home, I wrote that it is not really what God gave us, but how we react to what He has given. In relation to this, I am dedicating an entire article to one extraordinary human being, whom I do not know personally, but nonetheless moved me by the way he uses his life to serve God and inspire others... And he doesn't even have to bend a limb to do it!

Nick Vujicic is a Serbian born without limbs in Brisbane, Australia. He is missing both arms starting from the shoulders, as well as both legs. His feet are almost toe-less, except for the two on his left foot, which he jokingly calls his “chicken drumstick.”

Basing on how the world gauges what “normal” is, his “abnormalities” did not stop him from loving life, inspiring people and sharing God's message. There is even one video where he humorously remarked, “It's freezing... I can't feel my arms.” And it is really amazing how someone without arms can reach out and touch more lives than most of us who have them.

In fact, certain people I know who were blessed with fully functional limbs have more limitations than Nick does.

However, life wasn't always looking bright for him.

Going through school, he learned to do things like writing with his foot or typing with his foot, and even more tasks which normal people would do. When teased by his classmates, his parents would just tell him, “It's ok, you're just special...” But what he wanted was to be like everybody else. There was a distress in his heart for not knowing the answers as to why he was born the way he is.

Bullied, Nick became depressed by age eight, and attempted suicide by age ten.

Though from a Christian family, it was only by age fifteen when he finally asked Jesus to come into his heart. And it was in John Chapter 9:1-3 where Nick finally found the answer he was looking for...

“And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”

In an interview for Shire Christian Center, Nick added...

“All my life, all I've wanted was to know that someone understands... To someone know what I was going through. Because no one knows what my pain was. That's why I didn't believe people when they say everything's gonna be ok. Because they didn't understand what I was going through... They didn't know my future. But Jesus did, and he does... And he has a reason for everything.”

Eventually, Nick's confidence grew and his character developed. Making him one of the most liked people in school. He was even voted school captain of his primary school, and worked with the school council on fund-raising events for local charities and disability campaigns. At age seventeen, he started giving talks at his prayer group, and in due time, spear-headed his non profit organization, Life Without Limbs.

Nick Vujicic is now a motivational speaker, who has traveled to over twenty four countries and reached out to more than three million people.
